How to Choose a Medicare Advantage Plan
When it comes time to look for a Medicare Advantage Plan here are the four Cs that you should consider -- Coverage, Cost, Convenience and Customer Service
Coverage
- Cap that limits out-of-pocket expenses
- Additional preventive care
- Dental and/or vision benefits
- List of covered and excluded drugs
- Coverage gap for prescription drugs
Cost: Find the right balance between out-of-pocket costs and premiums for you
- Montly premiums
- Deductibles - The amount that you pay for health care before the plan begins to pay.
- Co-pay - The amount that you pay for each medical service such as a doctor visit.
- Co-insurance - The percent of a charge for services that you may have to pay after you pay any plan deductibles.
- Cost of brand name and generic drugs
Convenience
- Health plan's network of participating physicians, hospitals and pharmacies
- If you enroll in a private fee-for-service plan, verify that your provider accepts the health plan's terms and conditions
Customer Service
- Look for an independent source for information such as the Medicare Consumer Assessment of Health Plans (MA-CAHPS) released by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). The NCQA also provides report cards on a number of plans.
